Note that a suitable device license must be available for operating the device with Embedded Client, see Licensing.

Calibrate the Kodak Alaris scanner using the Kodak menu on the device.
Restart the device and wait until the Kodak menu appears (be patient). The Kodak menu appears by default for 10 seconds after the scanner boots (if no selection is made on the device during this time, the default application is launched). If the TwainDeviceService is already installed on the device, the menu appears when the TwainDeviceService is terminated.
In the Kodak menu, select UDDS Calibration and insert a (blank) DIN-A4 sheet. After the calibration, finish the process with Done.

The card reader connected to the scanner must be set up as a CDC device (Communications Device Class), not an HID device (Human Interface Device) as with most other device manufacturers.

The TwainDeviceService can only be installed directly on the device via a USB stick.

Copy the following files to a FAT32 formatted USB stick:
-
twaindeviceservice.setup.1.0.1msi (MSI installation package, possibly higher version number)
-
DeploymentKey.xml (encrypted XML file)
-
twaindeviceservice.app.web.4.12.X (TwainDeviceService package)
Twaindeviceservice.setup and DeploymentKey.xml may only be used in a matching combination. The files must not be renamed.

-
Restart the device and wait until the Kodak menu appears (be patient). The Kodak menu appears by default for 10 seconds after the scanner boots (if no selection is made on the device during this time, the default application is launched). If the TwainDeviceService is already installed on the device, the menu appears when the TwainDeviceService is terminated.
-
If not yet done, insert the USB stick and press Install.... Select d: for the USB stick in the dialog.
-
In the window that opens, select twaindeviceservice.setup.msi and then press Install. The installation starts and can take a few minutes.
-
After installation, the Kodak menu is displayed again and TwainDeviceService appears in the application list. Select TwainDeviceService and press Set Default to set the TwainDeviceService as the default application.
-
To make sure that the Kodak menu no longer appears at startup and the default application is started directly, remove the check mark from the Show Menu At Boot option.

The Kodak Alaris scanner should have all the latest Windows updates installed. Without recent updates, the TwainDeviceService might not be able to access the TWAIN driver on the device.
You can perform the updates immediately directly from the TwainDeviceService interface (recurring updates can be set up using Kodak's own Kodak Scan Station Scanner Management software).

In a browser, specify the hostname of the device with port 8080 (http, unencrypted) or 8083 (https, encrypted), for example:
-
https://kss-51552398.company.com:8083
-
http://kss-51552398.company.com:8080
Then click Login and log in. The default login is (case sensitive username and password):
User name: Administrator
Password: admin

In the TwainDeviceService interface, select Administration from the menu.

In the Windows Updates area, click Install Windows Updates to start installing Windows updates immediately.
You can get the list of previously installed updates using Load Update History.

After installing and starting the TwainDeviceService, add and configure the device via the web administration, see Add devices.
The device will not be found via the automatic device search and must therefore be created manually.
